A Masonic memorial service and reception will be held for George Marcus Chatburn, 91, of Coos Bay, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the North Bend Masonic Lodge, 2002 Union Ave., in North Bend. Cremation rites have been held under the direction of Nelson's Bay Area Mortuary. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Park 63060 Millington Frontage Road Coos Bay.
George was born Jan. 23, 1921, at Philadelphia, Penn., the son of Marcus and Princess (Allen) Chatburn. He was raised and educated in Philadelphia and Chicago. He joined the U.S. Navy Jan. 7, 1944, and served aboard the USS Wisconsin. During his year in the Asian/Pacific conflict, he saw combat that led to the end of the war.
He attended college in Chicago and went on to graduate as a salutatorian from the National College of Chiropractic in 1949. He began his chiropractic practice in 1950, moving to Oregon and finally settling in the Coos Bay area where he continued his career through the 1980s until his retirement.
He was married to Martha Davis in 1949 and had two children, Sharon Jean and Robert Joseph. They later divorced and in 1973 he married Marcet Hagen and they spent many wonderful years together until her death in 2001. He and Marcet traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Mexico in their RV making many lasting friendships along the way.
George was an avid golfer all of his life, being a charter member of the Coos Country Club. He was active in Kiwanis, Elks, Rotary, and a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge. He also loved fly fishing and big game hunting, traveling the Northwest along the many scenic rivers and remote wilderness areas. His biggest adventure later in life was the trip to Yakutat, Alaska to visit his son, Bob, who was teaching in the remote village. He had many fond memories of the fishing and exploring the wilderness of Alaska. George belonged to a pinochle group and had played for many years, most recently with good friends Robert Skeen, Jim Clifford, and Don Roby.
George is survived by his daughter, Sharon Smith; daugher-in-law, Ellen Elliott; granddaughter, Raina Smith and Bert Ford; granddaughter, Lesley and Rob Hodder; grandson, Clyde Elliot IV; grandson, Devin and Melissa Elliot; great-grandson, Daniel Hodder; and dear friend, Mary Adams.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcet; son, Robert Chatburn; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Chatburn; son, Clyde Elliott III; and son-in-law, Dan Smith.
