A memorial service for Dorothy Lou Foss, 87, of Coos Bay will be held at 4:00 p.m,, Saturday, Nov. 18 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road in Coos Bay, with Rev. Jon Strasman, officiating.  Private cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay.

Dorothy was born Feb. 1, 1930, in Canton, S.D., to Otto and Martha Sivesind.  She passed away Oct. 28, 2017 in Coos Bay.

Dorothy grew up in Canton, S.D. and Inwood, Iowa, and graduated from Inwood High School in 1947.  She attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., completing her State Certificate Course for teaching in 1950.  Dorothy married her hometown sweetheart, John T. Foss June 15, 1951 in Canton, S.D.  They shared 56 years of marriage together until John’s death in 2008.

In 1956, Dorothy and John moved to Oregon to pursue John’s legal career.  She attended Oregon College of Education in Monmouth and earned her Oregon State teaching credentials.  They moved to Coos Bay in 1957.  Dorothy taught First Grade at Bunker Hill Elementary for two years.  She left teaching to raise their three children, Steven, David, and Sara.

From Boy Scouts to 4-H, class parties to sporting events, Dorothy was very involved in her children’s activities.  She was also active in many local civic and social groups, including P.E.O., Progress Club, and Friends of the Coos Bay Library, for which she baked countless dozens of cookies over the years.

Dorothy’s lifelong faith journey began in her childhood at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Inwood, Iowa.  Shortly after moving to Coos Bay, She and John joined Trinity Lutheran Church.  They were among the founding members of Gloria Dei when it was formed in 1958 by the merger of Trinity and First Lutheran of North Bend.  Through the years, Dorothy was engaged in and contributed to so many facets of Gloria Dei.  She was a stalwart in faith and in her church community.

Dorothy is survived by her brother, Dave Sivesind and Tammie of Naperville, Ill.; her sons, Steven J. Foss of Coos Bay, David J. Foss and Kimberley of Kent, Wash.; her daughter, Sara L. Carmichael and Todd of Bellevue, Wash.; her grandchildren, Brian, Michael, and Daniel Foss, and Davis and Torin Carmichael.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her brother, Donald Sivesind and her sister, Doris Abts.
